Traumschleife Hunolsteiner Klammtour (Hunolstein gorge tour dream loop)
A few minutes after the start at the farm café “Hunolsteiner Hof”, you reach the ruined castle of the former bailiffs of Hunolstein. The castle was in the hands of the bailiffs of Hunolstein for almost 300 years. From the quartzite rock above the castle walls, there is an impressive view of the valley and the wooded Hunsrück heights opposite. From the castle, you walk through the centre of Hunolstein and then along a shady forest path into the valley.
There, the Dhron finds its way between smaller and larger boulders. The absolute highlight of the dream circuit is the 800-metre-long forest trail through the Hölzbachklamm gorge, where the water flowing down to the valley splashes past.
At the top, a wide forest path leads to the so-called Herrenwiesen (gentlemen's meadows) below Haag. Further along, you reach the lowest point of the tour. The Dhron is crossed at the Schafpuhl bridge. In ancient times, the stream was slightly dammed here to clean the sheep’s wool before shearing. Sometimes steep, sometimes less steep, along forest paths and meadow paths, this scenic and varied hike takes you back up to the start/finish point at the “Hunolsteiner Hof” farm café.
The trail was rated 78 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.

Turn-by-turn directions
The start of the scenically very varied tour is the farm café “Hunolsteiner Hof”. The first highlight is the castle ruins of Hunolstein. Unfortunately, only a few remaining walls of the former castle still stand, nevertheless, it is worth climbing up the 60 steps to the castle rock. You are rewarded with a magnificent view over the Hunsrück landscape and into the deeply cut Dhron Valley.
After leaving the village, the lonely Walholz church in the meadow valley comes into view. Now the trail takes you downhill to “Reinhardsmühle”. We pass it and follow hiking trail 80/85 to the left of the Dhron, which finds its way here between large boulders in the stream bed. Halfway along, on the right of the path, is the Kopus rock. This rock - like the castle rock - is part of a quartzite vein that runs right through central Hunsrück. This part of the Dhron Valley and the waterfall of the “Hölzbachklamm”, which we follow to the right, can rightly be described as wildly romantic. After leaving the Hölzbachklamm gorge, the hiking trail leads in a south-westerly direction to the Herrenwiese meadow below Haag. From here, the Kellertsbach accompanies us down the valley. At the end of the Wiesental, we change the side of the valley and come back to the Dhron. At this point in the valley, the stream used to be dammed up a little and the sheep’s wool fur was cleaned in it before shearing, which is how the bridge got its name. From the lowest point of the hiking tour, the trail now leads steadily uphill through an oak wood. After reaching the top, the trail leads back to the starting point via a long straight with great views.
