Around the Great Torfhaus Moor
easy
Distance 5 km
On this short tour we walk around the Great Peat Bog in the Harz National Park, one of the rare and ecologically particularly valuable raised bogs.
Situated in the middle of the Harz National Park, Torfhaus is a popular place to visit because of its skiing and tobogganing facilities and because of its excellent hiking network. Torfhaus belongs to the municipality of Altenau and, at 811 m, is the highest settlement in Lower Saxony. The village takes its name from peat cutting, as it is located directly on the peat bog, where peat was cut from the 16th century onwards and dried in "peat houses". We hike around the peat bog and follow in Goethe's footsteps on the Goethe Trail.
