Turn-by-turn directions
Here you leave the route of the previous stage, walk straight ahead directly to the alpine pasture and keep behind the building on a hiking trail that takes you across beautiful alpine pastures - a little steeper at the end - to the Bockhartscharte (2,226 m). Here you can take a five-minute detour to a mini-summit with a beautiful summit cross, from where you can enjoy a last view over the Rauris Valley.
Now hike on the other side of the Bockhartscharte over beautiful alpine pastures down to the idyllically situated Oberen Bockhartsee. Pass the lake on the left until you pass a rock wall and reach a fork in the path behind it. You follow the right path (Ww. "Unterer Bockhartsee" No. 110) downhill through the gentle valley floor and pass the Unterer Bockhartsee (reservoir) on its right bank. At the dam wall you reach the Bockhartseehütte, where you can fortify yourself for the onward journey to Bad Gastein.
Directly below the Bockhartsee hut, at the crossroads, do not turn left towards the "Miesbichlscharte" (no. 128), as on the main route, but turn right towards "Sportgastein" (trail no. 110). The trail first crosses a slope quite comfortably until it reaches a steep ridge and you can already see the houses of Sportgastein below you. Over this steep ridge, the trail winds down over roots, wooden and stone steps - partly with rope railings - until it flattens out shortly before Sportgastein and you reach a road at the Valeriehaus.
(Note: If the weather is very bad, you can take bus line 550 from Sportgastein to Bad Gastein).
Up to now the stage has been quite alpine, but the onward route to Bad Gastein from now on is more of a very nice walk - as befits a stage for bad weather: From the Valeriehaus you keep going down the road until you walk on the asphalted main road for about 600 m to the left in the direction of Bad Gastein. At a power station before a tunnel, leave the road and turn left onto the old road towards Bad Gastein. At first the gravel path is quite steep - soon, however, it becomes a kind of promenade that descends very impressively past numerous waterfalls through the gorge-like valley towards Böckstein/Bad Gastein. At the Astenalmen, two very good places to stop for refreshments, the promenade path widens into an alpine road (asphalted from the Heilstollen junction), which you continue to follow straight ahead along the river "Nassfelder Ache" out of the valley until you reach the large road again behind some houses, which you left at the power station. Follow this road downhill for about 250 m until you reach the first houses of Böckstein.
Here you follow the sign "Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Promenade" and turn left into a small asphalt road. You now walk along the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Promenade past the Montanmuseum (mining museum) through the historic centre of Böckstein and take the small asphalt road on the left at a crossroads in front of the church. Passing a few hotels, you reach a beautiful gravelled footpath on the left of the river, which you follow along the water to Bad Gastein. Before a subway under the railway and main road, you will see the valley station of the Stubnerkogel cable car on your left, your stage destination. You will soon reach the station via a car park.
