Small highlights (almost) along the way. Some call it a diversion, others detours and some detours. As a pleasure hiker, you will find several detours on this stage that are worthwhile.  The highest drinking water reservoir in Germany is about 1.7 kilometres away. The church in Carlsfeld, which served as a model for the Frauenkirche in Dresden, can already be seen from the Kammweg. The detour to the German Space Exhibition is a bigger challenge at 9.5 kilometres.

At the start of the stage on pleasant paths, the first detour to the Carlsfeld drinking water dam soon awaits you at the edge of the forest. It is the second highest dam in Germany after the Schluchsee. We walk over the 200-metre-long dam wall towards Carlsfeld. The view opens up and the famous Carlsfeld church can already be seen. The detour to the Trinitatis Church leads down into the village. A beautiful jewel that served as a model for many well-known central church buildings, e.g. the Frauenkirche in Dresden. After a silent prayer, the trail continues along the ridge path, above the ski slope, in the forest towards "Drei Bächel". This nature reserve is home to the oldest stand of spruce trees in Saxony. The 235-year-old spruces have impressive heights of up to 48 metres. By the way, spruce needles contain many valuable oils, which makes them the ideal remedy for coughs and fatigue. A break at the rest hut also helps against hiking fatigue here. Shortly before Morgenröthe, our path leads downhill to the stream. We stroll through the fairytale forest. At the road you can make a diversion to the space exhibition, one more day. At half height, the ridge trail now follows a small canal. When we reach the top of Mühlleithen, we enjoy the great view. The view sweeps far and wide and we review the "little" detours in our minds once more before we move into our first accommodation in the Vogtland.

Milestones: Weitersglashütte - Carlsfeld with Trinitatis church and dam - Drei Bächel nature reserve with Drei-Bächle rest area - Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz with German Space Exhibition - Hammergraben - Mühlleithen winter sports resort.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Weitersglashütte, the path winds romantically in the direction of Carlsfeld past the Weitersglashütte high moor nature reserve. Until the inn Talsperre is reached without much effort, there are fantastic views of Carlsfeld, also called "Sapperland". This is due to the fact that the people of Carlsfeld used to wear felt shoes (Sapper in Erzgebirge) almost all year round. As the oldest round church in Saxony, the Trinitatiskirche Carlsfeld was the model for the construction of the Frauenkirche in Dresden and the Seiffen church. Also noteworthy is the tradition of the bandonion, which is revered as the No. 1 tango instrument in South America. As early as 1854, the bandonion, invented by Heinrich Band, was built in Carlsfeld and exported worldwide. Today it is produced in Klingenthal. To see the highest drinking water dam in Germany at 904 m above sea level, it is worth taking a short round trip to the 200 m long dam wall of the reservoir. In the 1930s, the Weiterswiese settlement was flooded for this reason. Arriving back at the ridge trail via the "3-Talsperren-Wanderweg", the trail leads along the edge of the forest on near-natural paths through high spruce forest. Crossing the ski slope we enjoy a last view of Carlsfeld. On a natural forest path we touch the Schneehübel (974 m) and reach the Morgenröther Weg. We follow this well paved path for about 600 m in the direction of Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz into the nature reserve "Drei Bächel", which is already in the Vogtland. Soon we have reached the Drei-Bächle hut, a large rest area with several incoming hiking trails. Here we find one of the oldest spruce stands in Saxony. On the Kammweg we continue next to the rushing Markersbach to Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz. Here the first German cosmonaut in space, Siegmund Jähn, was born. In the district of Rautenkranz is the German Space Exhibition with many remarkable exhibits on the history of space travel and space research. This unique exhibition is worth a side trip or an extension day (9.5 km from the Kammweg!). The Kammweg leads us through the district Morgenröthe past the Wettinplatz and the training center of the state enterprise Sachsenforst via the Pyratalstraße to the Hammerweg. The path along the Hammergraben leads us in the direction of Sachsengrund. Then it goes steeply uphill to Mühlleithen. After three quarters of an hour of hiking at the latest, the first wood-paneled houses of the winter sports village become visible. We reach the forest road in Mühlleithen to the B283. Here are several good opportunities for rest, food and overnight stay directly on the ridge trail.
