Kammweg Section 08 "From Bärenstein to Fichtelberg Kurort Oberwiesenthal"
Arrive at the top! Who doesn't know the Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal? At 1,215 metres, it is the highest mountain in Saxony. The town of Oberwiesenthal on the southern slope of the mountain is also Germany's highest town at 914 metres. By the way, you don't necessarily have to climb the Fichtelberg on foot. Germany's oldest aerial cableway has been taking people and equipment up to the summit for about 90 years, which Kammweg hikers merely note with a smile.

First we go downhill to the Cranzahltalsperre, which was built from 1949 to 1952 to provide drinking water for the city of Annaberg. With the help of the FDJ youth organisation, it was completed within three years. During this time it was given the nickname "Friendship Dam". The resting benches at the end of the 500 m long dam wall are inviting. We hike to the Toskabank, named after the head forester's daughter. For many years, a rest bench with a group of deer stood on the rocks at Toskaberg. Unfortunately, it was completely destroyed on Ascension Day. Today, thanks to the citizens of Neudorf, we can once again take possession of a beautifully carved seating group. Enjoying the silence, we stroll towards Kretscham - Rothensehma. Soon we can see the Fichtelberg and hear the horns and whistles of the Fichtelberg railway, which still runs daily between Cranzahl and Oberwiesenthal. If you have tired legs, you can even get to Oberwiesenthal from here at a speed of 25 km/h. Otherwise just follow the water treadmill. Otherwise, simply take a short break at the water treading facility, then continue with renewed vigour. After crossing the railway tracks, follow the "Floßzechen", "Bärenfang" and "Stümpel" paths further uphill. You can stop at the "Waldeck" sports hut before the ascent. Now it is time to mobilise the last of your strength. We climb the highest mountain in Saxony via the Himmelsleiter and the Amtssteig. Once at the top, we enjoy the panorama and are sure to sleep heavenly well.
Milestones: Bärenstein mountain - Cranzahl dam - Toskabank rest area - Kretscham-Rothensehma - Bimmelbahn adventure trail - Kreuzbrückfelsen - Fichtelchens Erlebnispfad - Rotes Vorwerk - Amtssteig - Fichtelberg plateau.

Turn-by-turn directions
At the hikers' car park "Gipfelauffahrt Bärenstein", we follow the markings in the direction of Cranzahl. We soon reach the Cranzahl dam on mostly natural paths. Over the 500 m long dam wall of the drinking water dam, the trail continues on the paved straight peat road. On the way, we reach the "Toskabank" rest area, which offers us seating for a rest break. Via Fürstenweg and Wiesenweg past the stone pyramid in Kretscham-Rothensehma we reach the forest nature trail. This 1400 m long trail, lovingly laid out by the Neudorf forestry district, with water treading pools and rest areas, presents the forest habitat under the conditions of the low mountain range. On the Bimmelbahn adventure trail we can meet the Fichtelbergbahn, which has been running several times a day for over 100 years between Cranzahl and Oberwiesenthal with a steam locomotive. A short trip by train from Kretscham station to Neudorf to the Soup Museum or to the Weihrichkarzl Foam Manufactory provides unforgettable impressions. The Kammweg leads hikers along the Yellow Trail. Steadily ascending from the foot of the Fichtelberg, you approach Oberwiesenthal, which at 914 m is the highest town in Germany. Via the Floßzechen and Stümpel trails, it is worth taking a short detour to the Kreuzbrückfelsen rest area.Continue on the Bärenfangweg to the Waldeck or to the hotel of the Olympic ski jumping champion Jens Weißflog. From the Himmelsleiter ski slope, you can once again mobilise your energy on the cross-country ski trail during the hiking season to climb the Amtssteig, Saxony's highest mountain at 1215 metres. Caution: Here in the headwaters of the Zschopau, a section of about 200 m can be very wet and muddy at times. The Fichtelberg as a stage destination is the second highest mountain in the Ore Mountains after the Keilberg with 1244 m on the Bohemian side. A special attraction is Germany's oldest cable car, built in 1924, which connects the summit and the town centre with a difference in altitude of 303 metres. While Oberwiesenthal is known beyond its borders as a winter sports resort, the health resort also attracts visitors outside the winter season with its relaxing and extravagant activity offers. A beautiful postal distance column in Oberwiesenthal's market square bears witness to the forerunners of the narrow-gauge railway, the stagecoaches. Discover the mountain town, which is also home to globally successful winter sports athletes.
