It is just one hour by train from Dresden to Geising, and yet you are immersed in a completely different, much quieter world. The first stage of the Kammweg offers a bit of everything: mining tradition and panoramic mountains, heath landscape and chokeberry plantations. It is advisable to arrive the day before to start the day well rested. After all, it is 24 kilometres to the stage destination.

The Kammweg begins directly at the railway station in Geising. As soon as we have crossed the start line, 289 varied kilometres of hiking await us. Uphill - uphill we go straight to the Geisingberg. Always bargei - downhill we reach the Altenberg Mining Museum. On the opposite slope, a wonderful view of the Altenberger Pinge. Soon we reach the next summit. At 905 m, the Kahleberg is the highest elevation in the Saxon Osterzgebirge. Up here, with good visibility, you can see as far as Dresden. Now we hike through beautiful moorland along the ridge. At the Wüsten Teich, which is fed by the Warmbach, it is worth stopping for a swim. Before reaching the small logging village of Zaunhaus-Rehefeld, we climb up again. At the top, the border houses at the crossing to the Czech Republic and the highest aronia plantation in Germany greet us. We try the chokeberry banana shake in the little café - a power drink! Full of power, we walk along soft cross-country and meadow paths. Afterwards, the Kammweg even leads through a wedding avenue. After the Teichhaus, the trail continues uphill to the Steinkuppe. Then it's just "Kamm IN" ("come in") on the Kammweg. A cold beer, a warm shower and a good meal - what more do you need?

Milestones: Geising, railway station - Geisingberg (824 m) with Louisenturm tower and mountain inn - Altenberg mining museum - Altenberg liqueur factory - Altenberg tourist information/railway station - summer toboggan run - Kahleberg (905 m) with panoramic views - Rehefeld fence house - Hemmschuh nature reserve - Neurehefeld - railway museum in the former Neuhermsdorf railway station - Teichhaus - Steinkuppe (806 m) - Fischerbaude - Holzhau

Turn-by-turn directions

We start our hike directly at the railway station in Geising, past the shopping market we follow the KAMM markings in the direction of Geisingberg. After crossing the road, we enjoy the ascent to the Geisingberg via forest and meadow paths past a former quarry (small detour to the left) through a nature reserve. Arriving at the Geisingberg (824 m), a cosy stop in the mining tavern and the view from the Louisenturm await us. We can now enjoy a panoramic view of the Altenberg-Zinnwald UNESCO World Heritage Site. Descending towards Altenberg along field and meadow paths, we pass numerous witnesses of the old mining industry, such as a ventilation shaft or, a little off the trail, the Altenberger Pinge, an impressive funnel created by several adit collapses. On the way through the Kneipp health resort, we pass the railway station with tourist information and the site of the summer toboggan run before heading up the Kahleberg. At 905 m above sea level, the Kahleberg is the third highest elevation in the Osterzgebirge and also the highest mountain in the Saxon part of this mountain range. From here we can enjoy a panoramic view of Altenberg with its gallows ponds all the way across to Saxon Switzerland and, in good weather, even as far as the Jizera and Giant Mountains. As a natural landmark, the block dumps are home to rare lichens and mosses. After a small snack, we continue our hike downhill along a small path in the direction of Rehefeld-Zaunhaus and pass the Black Pond (= Wüster Pond) on the Lugsteinweg. Along the Kreuzweg through the quiet valley of the Großer Warmbach we reach the small village of Rehefeld-Zaunhaus, which was built as a lumberjack settlement. It is considered the coldest place in Saxony. Through the Hemmschuh nature reserve, the trail leads us into the middle of an old beech forest to Neurehefeld. Idyllically situated directly on the Kammweg, the Aronia Café in the Rasehorn holiday complex invites you to a culinary stopover. Tip: There is a border crossing for hikers, cyclists and cars to the Czech Republic in the immediate vicinity.Along the former railway embankment of the Holzhau - Hermsdorf-Rehefeld line, which was closed in 1972, we pass the former railway station. Today's hiking and sports hotel also houses a small railway museum on the history of the Nossen - Moldau railway line. The trail continues along and later above the railway embankment to Holzhau. Past the Teichhaus inn, the trail climbs up the Kammweg. On the way, it is worth making a detour to the Steinkuppe, which at 806 m is the highest point in Holzhau. You are welcome to sign the summit book there. This tour ends at the Fischerbaude in Holzhau or a little further on at the hikers' car park. We can now enjoy a wonderful view of Holzhau and Rechenberg in the Mulde Valley.
