Within this 1.5 km easy nature trail you pass plenty of significant historical sites and rich flora and fauna of an island in the outer archipelago of the West Coast of Finland.
The island has been inhabited since 16th Century by the fishermen. The sites along the trail bring you back to old days in the archipelago.
Besides the history, the island offers true gems for nature lovers. You can acquaint yourself with the island’s flora and fauna along nature trail. Around 180 plant species have been recorded on Tankar, amongst some truly rare ones. In late summer the visitors are rewarded with sea buckthorn berries growing wildly in the island and being for everybody to enjoy thanks to everyman´s rights.
For bird watchers the island is a fairyland. Staggering 260 different species have been spotted on the island. The island hosts even an active bird station. Besides the birds, you are most likely to encounter the sheep which are pasturing on the island.
The island offers lodging both in cabins and in Tankar Inn Hostel. Before the evening meal at Café Tankar you can relax in one of the wood-fired saunas. M/S Jenny connects Tankar with Kokkola during the summer.
