Greece: E4 from Sfikia dam to Litochoro

This route follows as best I could the E4 European Long Distance Trail. It is based on GPS files downloaded from the Internet, however these did not cover the complete route. I also used the 1:230,000 Anavasi map of Macedonia.
Starting from the Sfikia dam the route follows tarmac roads through the villages of Sfikia and Rizomata, then climbs steeply to the Elatochori ski resort. A forestry track through woods follows the side of the ridge leading to the Bara shelter.
After the shelter I followed vehicle tracks through open grassland along the ridge and then down through trees to the village of Ano Melia. Downloaded GPS files suggested following footpaths at this point but these were overgrown and invisible to me. After Ano Melia the route drops through farmland in hilly terrain passed various villages, before reaching the flat coastal plain. The archeological ruins and museum at Dion are well worth a visit. After Dion the track climbs through oak scrub to the new monastery of Agioy Dionysioy before following the road to the tourist town of Litochori with its hotels and restaurants.
