Long path that runs through the Cubania pine forest to the Sartorius mounts, with deviation on mount Rinatu
Description also available in Italian and German.
The path starts from Paternò-Castello refuge, which today is used as a deposit by the State foresters. You can reach the refuge from the Pietracannone houses (check for info on the web site or download the PietraCannone route on viewRanger!) or you can get in from the lava rocks slope you find along the Mareneve street that from Fornazzo leads to the Citelli Refuge. In this case it is possible to use the bikes for the path.
Once you get to the refuge, you can continue along the street on its left or you can get the wider path that starts a few metres down the road. We go up the steep along the refuge until we meet the wider path and we continue our walk on the right.
On a bend you can see the signs for the path that leads to Rinatu mount. We decide to take it, but before we go up the mount we decide to walk through a path that leads to the Bove Valley. We go back, we walk up the mount with some difficulties, we walk around the crater which is completely covered by vegetation. We go down, cutting towards the other path We continue our walk on the left.
From here on it is a nice walk that leads to the end of the pine wood. At this point we walk through the 1971 lava flows, while we are surrounded by a few beautiful aspens.
We get into another path that leads to the Sartorius mounts, nearby the Citelli refuge.
A few details on the path: length and difference in height of the path are referred to one way walk. If you want to go back walking you'll have to walk for 7 more kms.
It is possible to use two cars, leaving one nearby the Sartorius mounts so that you can go back by car.
Another option is to climb with a mountain then you coming back from Mareneve street.
