Turn-by-turn directions
The beginning of the Apfelstrudel coffee house tour in Cafe Westend is easily accessible by public transport. For example, you can get by train from Salzburg or St. Pölten to Westbahnhof and at the end of the tour, after visiting the Cafe Museum, take the U1 from Karlsplatz to the main train station and from there back to St.Pölten, Salzburg or further on.
After visiting the Cafe Westend, we walk Mariahilfer Straße towards the center of Vienna to the Cafe Ritter, which is set back a bit on the corner from Schadekgasse/Amerlingstraße.
The Kaffee Ritter is also a typical corner coffee house, which was built by the architect Oskar Merz like the Cafe Westend in historical style. The interior of the Café Ritter dates from the early 20th century and has largely been preserved.
From Cafe Ritter we walk Mariahilfer Straße further towards the city until we turn right into Capistrangasse. After crossing Windmühlgasse, we go down the Capistran steps to Fillgradergasse, which we continue to the left to Bienengasse. We turn right into Bienengasse and go down Bienengasse to Gumpendorfer Straße. On Gumpendorfer Straße we turn left and walk a little way into town until we see Cafe Sperl on the right, which is on the corner of Lehargasse.
From Cafe Sperl we go down Girardigasse to the Naschmarkt. Through the Naschmarkt we continue towards the city center. At the end of the Naschmarkt we cross Operngasse and continue on the right hand side to Friedrichstrasse.
After we have also crossed Friedrichstraße we are right in front of the Cafe Museum which is the last stop on the Viennese apple strudel path.
The Cafe Museum was originally set up by the Austrian architect Adolf Loos. Red seating niches and ball lamps are typical of the interior of the Cafe Museum today. By the way, the apple strudel tastes very good in all coffee houses on the tour.
