This hike is almost completely unknown, but well worth the trip. You can cross over the Rwenzori Mountains in one day. Views towards Fort Portal and into the DRC are exceptional. The western side of the hike gives access to a little known part of Uganda that is unlike the rest of the country.
There is no easier or cheaper access to the Rwenzori mountains. Here, you can hike up and over the lower part of the range in a single day and experience both sides of these incredible moutains. A hike up to Karangora Peak can also be arranged here. From Karangoro Peak, you may have views of Mount Emin and Mount Gessi, the 4th and 5th highest mountains in the range. These mountains are so remote that they are rarely seen and no trails exist in that part of the Rwenzori. Rwenzori treks with RTS and RMS almost never include Emin or Gessi on the itinerary.
You can start this hike from either Fort Portal or Budibugyo and get public transport back to your car. You can hike from either town or get a boda boda to the trailhead to reduce the kms.
Note that the elevation is much higher on the Fort Portal side and lower on the Bundibugyo side. If you are more keen on uphill hiking, start on the Congo side and for more downhill, start on the Fort Portal side. Or make this an out and back turning around somewhere in the middle.
There is a UWA Park office on the eastern side at Kazingo from which you can check in, pay your fee and hire a guide.
