A steep and exciting hike up to the border of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC. This follows lush forest protected within Mgahinga National Park.
Besides Elgon, this is probably the most popular hike in Uganda.
Don't follow my track on your GPS for this one because I drew the line by hand. Instead, UWA rangers will show you the way and as the trail is so well maintained and clear, it is easy to follow.
This trail takes about eight hours for most groups. You aren't allowed to go on your own. A ranger will carry a gun to scare off potentially dangerous buffalo.
It is an up and back trail. There is no camping in the park or on the trail. There is a campsite near the trailhead. Mount Gahinga uses this trailhead as well.
You must pay for two things, park entrance and a guide. This works out to 80 USD per person for foreigners and much less for Ugandans.
You must book this hike the day before at the latest. Showing up the day of won't be allowed as the guides fear some hikers are too slow for a late start. Guides will insist on an early morning start around 7am. This is the case for all three virunga peaks in this park.
