Hike in the footsteps of the Romans as you make your way from Trier to Schweich
And so begins your Moselle Trail adventure. Fuel up on a typical German breakfast of eggs, fresh bread rolls, cheese and ham. Today’s trail is undulating and varied, but highly rewarding. Ascend steep open trails, through forests and past orchards. Pause along the way to catch your breath and take in panoramic views of the lush Moselle Valley beneath you.
Walk to the small town of Schweich. Nestled on the bank of the Moselle, Schweich is a historic Roman wine route town. Why not visit the Niederprümer Hof, a former farm which is now a cultural centre, complete with a wine cellar where you can enjoy a wine tasting or two.
In rainy weather, the narrow roads can be muddy and slippery, we recommend wearing footwear with a good grip.
Botanical highlights in the Meulenwald forest
Discover varies tree species, they were planted for experimental purposes in 1954 to test climate-friendly and fast-growing timber suppliers, as the tree population had been severely affected during the Second World War. 21 species have survived and have grown into giants. Spot massive Douglas firs, Siberian birch, Japanese cake trees, and Northern Caucasian fir and impressively large mammoth trees from China.
We recommend wearing hiking boots that are well broken-in, plus a rain jacket and waterproof trousers in wet weather, as well as taking sun cream and a hat on nicer days.
In your information pack, you’ll find a detailed list of all the required hiking gear, including some good hiking boots, appropriate clothing, a rain jacket and a backpack.
