Hike from Karmir Shuka through a beautiful gorge (crossing the river multiple times) full of ruined historic mills, continue to a working one, go over a historic old bridge and hike up to the restored convent in Avetaranots.
Overview: Starting in the busy town of Karmir Shuka (Red Market), head west through a beautiful canyon with many ruined old water mills. There are a number of river crossings, so take the alternative route if it's rained much in the past couple of days or if you don't like wild river crossings. Next interesting site is a restored old water mill which is producing flour for the local villagers and is open for visitors. A little further along you'll pass a nice little waterfall and during mulberry season, a little mulberry vodka (tuti oghi) distillery. You'll pass another village and soon before reaching Avetaranots you'll get to a picturesque historic foot bridge. Upon reaching Avetaranots you'll pass an old village church, a shop, a water fountain and end up at the old convent on top of a small cliff. There's also a historic Melik's house (or "palace") in the village.
Tips: * Watch for leeches if you swim under the waterfall.
* You'll have to cross a stream or two where you may get your feet wet. Have water shoes, or else you'll need to go barefoot or get your shoes wet.
