Tržič–Dovžanova soteska–Dolina–Jelendol–Medvodje–planina Pungrat–planina Šija–planina Ilovica–Jelendol–Dovžanova soteska–Tržič
One of the most beautiful mountain bike tours in Tržič begins at the municipal atrium in front of the Tourist Promotion and Information Centre (TPIC) Tržič. Cross the bridge over Tržiška Bistrica and turn left in the direction of the Dovžan Gorge. Remain on the main road, which leads past Slap and Čadovlje villages, through the area of the Dovžan Gorge Natural Monument to hamlets Dolina and Jelendol. In Jelendol, keep to the right and switch onto a gravel road, which brings us to Medvodje after 4km. Despite the fact that there is still more than 1,000m of elevation to gain, drive straight across the bridge and then immediately turn right to the Stegovnik waterfall, which is a few minutes away. Return to Medvodje, cross the bridge and turn right and follow the Košutnik stream. After about 3km of ascent, turn left in the direction of the Pungrat and Šija mountain pastures. A beautiful forest road with occasional steeper climbs leads through the forest and often reveals views of Košuta to the north, Storžič and Tolsti vrh mountains to the south and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps to the east. After 5km, pay attention to a sharp turn to the right, again in the direction of Pungrat and refuge Taborniški dom Šija. We are slowly approaching the southern grassy slopes of Košuta, the longest Slovenian mountain. The vast bumpy meadows on the Pungrat mountain pasture, enlivened by livestock grazing in the summer, fascinate even the most demanding explorer. At Pungrat, cycle in the direction of Taborniški dom Šija, which you reach after a 3km panoramic ride with Košuta in the palm of our hands. Past the Taborniški dom, you can also descend to the Ilovica mountain pasture in the direction of Kofce, and then return to Taborniški dom Šija for a well-deserved lunch, as you have overcome more than 1,200 meters in altitude. Take your time for the views, as they are truly magnificent. After a longer break, return along the same route to the intersection under Pungrat, and then turn right. At the next intersection, where the road to Kofce leads to the right, turn left downwards. The section of the road to Jelendol is very busy in the summer, so be extra careful when going down. You can leave your bike in Jelendol and walk to the nearby family tomb of the Born family or continue to Dolina, where you can visit the Dolina Exhibition and Education Centre (check the opening hours beforehand). Through the Dovžan Gorge, with a stop at a waterfall and a geological column or an info point (in summer), return to the starting point, where you can continue exploring the small town below Karavanke on foot or by bicycle.
