The new cemetery in Mühlhausen is the former external location of the BUGA. In terms of garden design, it is the most important cemetery in Thuringia and was designed by Karl Theodor Huss. The design, the structure and the unity of the site bear witness to the innovative garden culture of the early 20th century. The park with a variety of green elements (trees, hedges, bushes) in connection with elements of sculpture, inscription panels, reliefs and wrought-iron works act as a total work of art, which has been under monument protection since 1995. This tour is a recommendation for a tour of the New Cemetery. It leads to features worth seeing.

The route begins at the main entrance to the New Cemetery, which you pass and follow to the left. The first stylistic element is a wrought-iron bird bath in a pointed arch arcade in the western outer wall. To reach it, turn off the path to the left for a short distance. Back on the original path, follow it to the end and turn right. If you continue straight ahead, after a short while you will discover the graceful "Eva Fountain" on the left. It was created by the Mühlhausen sculptor Walter Krause and forms the end of a main axis of the cemetery. Back again, the path leads straight ahead until you reach the Soviet military cemetery at the end on the right. Once you have passed this, follow the path to the right and you will come to the German military cemetery. The intended route continues along the eastern outer wall, past the German military cemetery in a southerly direction, until you turn right and follow the path to the central building. On this section you can see diversely designed and appealing graves. In the cemetery it is always worth leaving the main path to listen to birds on a resting bench, to admire special gravestones and thus to experience the uniqueness of the cemetery. The central building forms the structural centre of the entire cemetery complex and contains the crematorium, a debris hall and adjoining functional rooms. An exhibition on the sculptor Walter Krause and the New Cemetery itself allows visitors to obtain comprehensive information. From the central building, follow the main path to the entrance and thus to the end of the tour.
