A wonderful lake kayaking route from Kuopio Passenger Harbor to the wilderness of Pieni-Telkko island on Kallavesi lake. On the way you pass the historical milieu of Itkonniemi.
Canoe in cultural landscapes to a wilderness island and admire the idyllic islands of Itkonniemi, where you can pick delicious mushrooms in the autumn. Island of Pikku-Telkko with its lean-to and campfire sites is one of the city's favorite excursion destinations all year round. On the island, the city is hardly noticed. The peace of nature is mainly violated by idyllic ships as well as motor and sailboats.
The canoeing route initially follows the boat route. Coming to the Kuopio waterworks, at the tip of Itkonniemi, the route crosses the open lake of the large Kallavesi lake.
The crossing is up to 1.2 km and is vulnerable to north and south winds. Pieni-Telkko Island is located in the middle of Kallavesi, between Vaajasalo island and the cape of Itkonniemi in Kuopio.
You can also take a break at Honkalahti swimming beach at Itkonniemi or on the idyllic little peninsula and enjoy walking on magnificent pine cliffs.
You can enjoy your own snacks at the Itkonniemi vantage point or Honkalahti beach.
The route requires good kayaking skills, swimming skills and knowledge of water traffic rules as well as map reading skills. In windy weather, the route is challenging and it is not always possible to paddle all the way to Pieni-Telkko Island. The weather may change quickly, so it is necessary to follow the weather forecasts.
Seikkailukeskus Adventure Center rents and sells paddling gear at the starting point of the route.
Alahovi Winery: Only 2 km from Pieni-Telkko island you can reach the Alahovi Winery, open in the summer. However, the best way to visit Alahovi during summer is to join a cruise from Kuopio Harbor.
Instructions from the Railway Station to the Adventure Center on Makasiinikatu 2, Passenger Harbor: Distance 1.1 km, walking 15 min:
Take a left in front of the Railway Station and walk east on Asemakatu 300m, turn right on Maaherrankatu and walk until you reach Tulliportinkatu. Turn left on Tulliportinkatu and walk 150 m, turn right on Makasiinikatu, and you will reach the Makasiini building. The entrance to the adventure center is on the lake side.
There are parking spaces along the streets (some free of charge but mostly for a restricted time) near Passanger harbour and Makasiininkatu. There are also parking lots next to the Passenger Harbour (chargeable).
Include: towel, change of clothes, sunglasses and headgear, as well as footwear that is not slippery on wet stones (canoe slippers). Avoid laces on your shoes especially if you paddle in a kayak so your feet don’t get caught in the pedals. Canoeing equipment can be rented from the Seikkailukeskus Adventure Center: paddle, spray skirt (kayak), life jacket, canoe / kayak, map. The Seikkailukeskus Adventure Center rents and sells a variety of kayaking equipment.
A canoe is more difficult to control in the wind than a kayak because it has more wind surface, so a kayak is clearly a better option in open water.
