Route 4 Swaledale South 24 miles 2 – 3 hours
Turn R out of the George & Dragon and head uphill past the church and onto Downholme Moors where there is a superb viewpoint over Swaledale. Continue downhill to Downholme village (3 miles) and turn L along the A6108 for 2½ miles past Walburn Hall until you reach the junction at Halfpenny House (5½). Turn L then bear R up the road onto Barden Moor. Bear R as the main road bends L (7 miles) then turn R at the next crossroads (8) and down to East Hauxwell (8½). Straight on then L at the church to Hunton (10¼). Keep L in Hunton then bear R to Arrathorne (11¼). Straight on to the crossroads and straight across to Hornby (12½). Past the church then through the deer park to the junction north of Hackforth (14). Turn L and head through East Appleton before reaching the junction close to the A1(M) (16¼). Staright on then bear L towards Tunstall. Through the village then turn R (18¼) towards Catterick Garrison. Continue for 2 miles to the traffic lights on the A6136. Straight on then down, up and through Hipswell to the roundabout on the A6136 (21). Turn R out of the Garrison then bear L in a mile before descending then climbing to Sleagill (22½). Turn L past the Holly Hill Inn then bear R and follow the road back to the G&D (24 miles).
