Another important historical site is Kyminlinna Fortress, the construction of which began in 1790 by order of Katariina the Great. You cannot yet visit the inside of the fortress, but you can explore this magnificent fortress by walking around the ramparts outside.
Kotka is the park capital of Finland and one of these magnificent parks is located on the banks of Siikakoski. Completed in 2020, Koskipuisto offers a wide range of things to see and do. The park's first-class outdoor trails run through the arboretum and protected areas. On a hot summer's day, you can refresh yourself with a bike ride or a dip in the river. The two swimming areas in the park are a good place to do this. There is also a swimming area at Tattarinkoski, run by the locals.
And although this is an urban cycling route, part of it runs through an idyllic rural village.
Author’s recommendation
- Along the route you will find some charming cafés where you can stop for a bite to eat. You can also visit the Metsola Steam Brewery to learn about the local brewery.
- The sparkling Langinkoski is one of Kotka's most spectacular sights. The Langinkoski nature reserve has nice, well-maintained paths, which you can also cycle on normal bikes. If you're lucky, you might run into an emperor and empress at Langinkoski. The imperial fishing lodge stands tall on the banks of a sparkling stream. There is also a café.
- It is worth spending a moment on the banks of Siikakoski, admiring the water and the scenery. The Siikakoski rapids park has been built on the banks of the lake, offering many things to see and experience. The park's paths are also mainly suitable for cycling, and you can take a coffee break on the terrace of Villa Munkholma on the banks of the rapids.
- On the way back, you can stop off at Lohilaani to try and catch some fish. There is a trout pool fishery. The café in Lohilaani serves a wide range of fish delicacies.
- At Tattarinkoski there is a small beach, run by the locals, where you can refresh yourself while cycling.
