The Russian Emperor Alexander III visited Langinkoski in the Kymijoki estuary in the late 19th century, fell forever in love with the place and built himself a fishing lodge there. The lodge became a favourite place for the entire imperial family, providing a welcome contrast to the glamour and harsh court etiquette of St Petersburg.
Today the fishing lodge is a museum. Downstairs you will find the hall, kitchen, dressing rooms and study rooms. Upstairs you can take a peek into the imperial bedrooms. Original artefacts and photographs tell the stories of the dignified inhabitants of this modest house. In the courtyard there is a small chapel, a fish hatchery, a fishermen's cottage and a fishing tackle shed.
Langinkoski is still a popular fishing spot. The surrounding nature reserve also has plenty of trails for leisurely hiking.
Author’s recommendation
- A cosy café, Dagmar, has been renovated in Langinkoski's old caretaker's building. The café is also open during the winter season. Information about the café can be found here and current opening hours can be found on Facebook. Another café, Café Keisarinmaja, is open during the summer on the rocky outcrop above.
