Hamina is an idyllic city full of history, with an unique city centre built in a circular pattern. Hamina also has beautiful and diverse nature - the small city is perfect for a bicycle visit.

The beginning part of the route has you going around in circles, as is often said in Hamina. The fortifications dating back to the 18th century and the exceptional circular town plan mark the town’s military history, well preserved to this day. Numerous buildings have survived from that time and Hamina’s old houses in particular are well worth a visit. Outside the walls, the town quickly turns into countryside, offering peaceful forest roads, grain fields, and two birdwatching towers where you can acquaint yourself with the life of wetland birds.

The Pitkäthiekat camping area with its services and beautiful sandy beaches is located halfway through the route. It is a good place to take a break.

The Hamina cycling route is 16 kilometres long. The route varies from hard-surfaced bikeways to narrow dirt roads. However, the entire route is in good condition, meaning that it is accessible by regular city bike. You can start from anywhere on the route. In this description, the starting and ending point is the Hamina town centre. The route is not marked in the terrain.

Author’s recommendation

  •  Take a dip in refreshing sea water at the Pitkäthiekat beach. In the immediate vicinity of the beach there is a café/restaurant where it is nice to take a short break.
  • Hamina is famous for its high-end cafés. At the end of your trip, visit one of the following: Konditoria Huovila, Raati Cafe Kaneli or Kahvila Varvara.
