From Ybbs to Spitz (Danube Cycle Path)
Bike Riding
· Donau-Niederösterreich
The Danube Cycle Route takes us in eight days from the three-river city of Passau to the Austrian capital Vienna, for which we should take an extra day. Plenty of cultural and geological highlights await us along the way.

This stage takes us through a particularly beautiful river landscape to Melk. Here we encounter the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, whose west façade shines in a very warm light, especially in the late afternoon, and is a wonderful photo motif. The sublime building has a history of over 1000 years and plenty of precious relics, magnificent marble halls, gleaming facades and much more to see during a visit. Melk was one of Austria's most important cultural and spiritual centres and in the 15th century was the trigger for the Melk Reform, one of the most important medieval reforms. We continue through one of Austria's oldest cultural landscapes, the Wachau. The Danube River between Melk and Krems was not declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for nothing. In the inns and restaurants along the way, it is impossible not to notice that the region is characterised by one particular fruit, which can be found everywhere on the menus: the apricot. As compote, made into dumplings or sorbet, or as jam - the local chefs have come up with quite a few ways to put the sweet fruit on the table at any time of the day.

Turn-by-turn directions
On the Erlauftal federal road we leave the town of Ybbs, crossing the river Ybbs and immediately turn left to reach the cycle path on the banks of the Danube. On the stairway path we cycle through small settlements between the river and the railway line to Säusenstein. In the village "Am Rechen" we cross the river Erlauf and shortly afterwards turn half-right at the Pöchlarner Weiher to the Nibelung monument. From Pölchlarn we cycle along the Danube cycle path in the direction of the Melk power station, which we cycle extensively around in an anti-clockwise direction. After a while, we reach the Donaublick garden restaurant. Here we turn right, cross the small lift bridge and come across the old town of Melk, which together with the Benedictine Abbey are one of the highlights of our Danube tour.Later we cross the bridge leading to Emmersdorf on the country road and continue cycling along the large Danube federal road to Grimsing. There a narrower path leads us through orchards back to the Danube. Keeping to the left, we continue on a parallel road to the main road through "Aggsbach Markt". Before Willendorf in der Wachau, we turn left into the road "Groisbach", which runs parallel to the railway tracks. From Schallenbach, we go through more narrows between the forest embankment and the Danube into the winegrowing villages of Willendorf and Schwallenberg until we finally reach Spitz.
