The first stage of the Coal I Steam I Light cycle route begins in Bitterfeld-Wolfen and ends in the southern Leipzig Neuseenland. Lake Großstolpen offers a well-deserved cool-down after a long bike ride. Along the route, tangible milestones of industrial history, such as the Zschornewitz power plant or the Mining Technology Park, are strung together. If you want to spend a little longer in the region, you can cycle around the mining lakes, which almost doubles the distance.

The Coal I Steam I Light cycle route is very varied and consists mostly of asphalted cycle paths. On some short stretches, the route also takes you along natural paths.

Author’s recommendation

The bus line 106 (Markkleeberg - Wachau - Probstheida/Auenhain - Störmthaler See - Böhlen) now also operates with bicycle trailers!

Turn-by-turn directions

From Bitterfeld-Wolfen, the cycle route leads along the shore of Lake Neuhäuser in the direction of Delitzsch. Passing Lake Werbelin and Lake Schladitz, the route continues to Hayna, where there is a connection to the Äußerer-Grüner-Ring cycle route. The route now continues in the direction of Leipzig. Here you can change to the Parthe-Mulde cycle route as well as the Elster and Pleißer cycle paths. The cycle path finally leads to Markkleeberg, where there is a connection to the Neuseenland cycle route. Further highlights await visitors on the way to Groitzsch. Past the Mining Technology Park, the route continues to the Lippendorf power plant with its information center. Those interested can see what an active open pit mine looks like at the viewing platform. The tour ends at Lake Großstolpen in Groitzsch and offers connection opportunities to the Neuseenland cycle route.
