Traisental Bike Tour

From the marina in Traismauer – thus offering a convenient connection to the River Danube Cycle Trail – the Traisen Valley Cycle Trail travels along the Traisen river to Herzogenburg. In St. Andrä, the route runs across a bridge to the other side. Then it’s on to St. Pölten using asphalted riverside paths away from the traffic.

There are no notable inclines throughout this stage, making the first section of the Traisen Valley Cycle Trail  a good choice for families with children.

From St. Pölten to Lilienfeld

Running along asphalted riverside paths and quiet back roads, the Traisen Valley Cycle Trail continues to Lilienfeld via Wilhelmsburg. There are no significant ascents on this section either.  

From Lilienfeld to St. Aegyd am Neuwalde

From Lilienfeld, the journey continues along idyllic riverside paths via Hohenberg, encompassing a few gentle climbs on the way to St. Aegyd/Neuwalde. There is an altitude of 200 m to tackle on this third section, but this is easy enough to conquer even for very young cyclists.

In Freiland, one of the two headwaters of the Traisen (the Rechttraisen or Türnitzer Traisen) disappears from sight. From now on, the path follows the Unrechttraisen, which accompanies cyclists to St. Aegyd.

Tip: The railway cycle route to Türnitz branches off in Freiland, and leads along the old railway line for 9 km and through three tunnels.  

From St. Aegyd am Neuwalde to Mariazell

The next destination is Kernhof, with its Camel Theatre and “White Zoo”. Kernhof sees the start of the most difficult stretch of the entire cycle trail: a 4 km winding ascent up the Gscheid, just before the border with Styria. This stretch is tough, which is why some cyclists choose to walk it instead.

Once at the highest point, the trail switches from well-surfaced paths to a little-used federal road that runs via Ulreichsberg, past Lake Hubertus and along the river Walster until finally reaching its destination at the Mariazell Basilica.
