Starting from Portorož in Istria, the emerald green path (the so-called „Via verde smeraldo“) leads to the harbour city of Trieste in Italy. It crosses the impressive mountain landscape of the Julian Alps and offers panoramic views of the mountain massif right from the start of the tour. The route then leaves Monfalcone near the Timavo and Isonzo rivers. There you can admire the Mediterranean flora and numerous bird populations in the Foce dell’Isonzo nature reserve. The rest of the route leads to the town of Grado, which is located on the so-called Isola del Sole (Isola of the Sun). The Grado lagoon, a bird paradise with lush vegetation, is located in front of it. The route continues via the neighbouring municipality of Aquilea to Torviscosa and via the Marano lagoon directly to Lignano Sabbiadoro. Now we are already on the Serenissima road, which leads straight to Venice.

Author’s recommendation

The grottoes of San Canziano are only about 15 km from Trieste and are definitely worth a visit. They have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour begins on the coast of Portorož and runs from the town of Izola along the Adriatic coast to the seaport of Koper, from where it continues for about 30 km to Trieste. The cycle path winds along the Adriatic coast in a northerly direction to Monfalcone, then continues westwards via the Foce dell’Isonzo nature reserve for a total of 147 km to the coastal town of Grado. From there the route returns to the mainland via SR352 near Belvedere. We follow the SR352 to Cervignano del Friuli and turn west onto the SS14 until we reach Marano Lagunare after another 35 kilometres.

We cross several small canals and turn onto the SP56. This provincial road winds its way to Lignano Sabbiadoro. We continue west, cross the Tagliamento river and turn onto the provincial road SP42 8 Via Fausta, a little further north. After a short stopover in Portogruaro at Concordia Sagitaria, we head south again and return to the Adriatic coast after about 40 km. There we pass Caorle and Jesolo and at Punta Sabbioni near Cavallino-Treporti we cross over to Lido. Venice now lies in a north-westerly direction, Chioggia is about 27 km further south-west.
