Afterwards it goes into the interior and the province of Samogitia. The Samogitians (lit. Žemaiten) have preserved their character and dialect, which is known as persistant and stubborn. They were also the last European pagans to be converted to Christianity. Altars of their ancient pagan beliefs can still be found on the castle hills of the region. Apart from the heritage of Baltic mythology and local folk culture, traces of the Cold War can also be found here.
The tour reaches its easternmost point when it goes around the lake Plateliai. Here you will find the Cold War Museum and the Siberija observation tower with a view of the lake and the National Park.
The tour continues via the monastery town of Kretinga, for which you should plan some time, back to Klaipeda.

The Samogitia region of Lower Lithuania (lit. Žemaitija) in the west of Lithuania, is considered one of the most authentic regions of the whole country. The region inevitably gives the impression that it is "original Lithuanian" and yet very special. For centuries, it has preserved its own identity and culture, which is even expressed in its own flag. The Samogitians (lit. Žemaiten) have preserved their character and dialect, known as persistant and stubborn. They were also the last European pagans to be converted to Christianity. Altars of their ancient pagan beliefs can still be found on the castle hills of the region. If you want to explore the country from the coast, be sure to plan a stop in Samogitia and visit one of the most mysterious regions of Lithuania. Here you can discover the heritage of Baltic mythology and local folk culture, as well as traces of the Cold War.
