Between Helsingborg and Göteborg runs the 390 km long long-distance cycle path "Kattegattleden". The route was officially opened in the summer of 2015 and has since connected the coastal landscape of southern Sweden with beautiful vantage points, interesting cultural monuments and typical regional restaurants.

Kattegattleden is part of the South Sweden Trails.

Sweden's first national tourist cycle path is divided into 8 stages, which are between 22 and 72 km long. The eventful route follows the west coast along low-traffic roads and well-paved paths. You will cross characteristic fishing villages, pass historic sites and stop in lively small towns such as Ängelholm, Båstad and Varberg.

At the beginning and end of the tour you will explore two larger cities: Helsingborg and Göteborg. Helsingborg is only a few kilometers away from the Danish mainland and is now connected by a regular ferry service. Göteborg is Sweden's second largest city and the center of the west coast. In the many bars and restaurants of the city center our tour finds a comfortable conclusion. The cultural life has museums, opera, theater, music and much more to offer. From Göteborg there are day trips to the Archipelago.

Turn-by-turn directions

Stage 1: Helsingborg to Höganäs (22 km)

Our tour starts in Helsingborg, one of the oldest cities in Scandinavia. It lies directly on the Öresund, only about 4 km away from the Danish mainland. We cycle comfortably along the beach promenade and should not miss the visit of the "Kärnan", a 40 m high medieval watchtower.

Through the beautiful rocky landscape of the Kulla peninsula we reach Höganäs. Many small shops and cafés await us in the centre. The village is particularly famous for its ceramics, which were once produced in the local factories. Today, Magasin 36 is located in the factory halls, where various products from northwestern Skåne are sold.

Stage 2: Höganäs to Ängelholm (40 km)

Our way continues across the beautiful Kullahalvön peninsula and its dramatic nature. There a longer break is worthwhile, the view over the Öresund and the Kattegat from the rugged rocks is nevertheless unique. In this area it is very likely that bottlenose dolphins and seals can be observed.

Now we head east towards the 500 year old town Ängelholm. Along our way there are some nice bathing bays as well as an agriculturally used hinterland with numerous farm shops. In Ängelholm the railway museum is worth seeing for the whole family.

Stage 3: Ängelholm to Båstad (57 km)

From Ängelholm we continue along the coast via the Bjäre peninsula, where the terrain becomes more hilly, to Vejbystrand and then in a straight line to Båstad. This place name should be well known to tennis fans, as Båstad has a well-known tennis court.

Stage 4: Båstad to Halmstad (39 km)

Shortly after Båstad we cross the border from Skåne to Halland. Through the well-known seaside resorts Skummeslöv- and Mellbystrand we drive north along a long sandy beach. Through Gullbranna we continue to Laxvik and to the Iron Age cemetery near Påarp. Finally we reach Halmstad, where the castle of the same name offers a beautiful backdrop for a rest.

Stage 5: Halmstad to Falkenberg (57 km)

On the way to Falkenberg we pass Tylösand, one of the most beautiful beaches of the region. There we turn north and pass the beach meadows around Särdal. The following forest landscape soon opens to rough rocks, later to fertile farmland. In Falkenberg we marvel at the medieval centre.

Stage 6: Falkenberg to Varberg (40 km)

Passing a species-rich bird reserve and the bay of Apelviken, popular with windsurfers, we reach Varberg with its manorial fortress from the 13th century.

Stage 7: Varberg to Kungsbacka (72 km)

In the north of Varberg, the picturesque sandy beaches are increasingly turning into rocky landscapes with small islands in front of them. We continue past fields and riding stables. The next stop is the Rolfsbron in Hanhals, a beautiful stone arch bridge from the 17th century.

Stage 8: Kungsbacka to Göteborg (63 km)

There our way leads along the river. We should take our time to admire the beautiful city centre with its historic wooden houses. Then we follow the coastline of the Kungsbäckafjord to the south. We cross Onsala and turn west in Gottskär. In a big curve we cross the Onsala peninsula to Särö, where the nature reserve Särö Västerskog invites us for a walk by the sea. In the beautiful coastal landscape we then hike in a northerly direction until we reach our destination Göteborg.
