Cycling Helsinki East Region tour
The cycling route shows you the eastern shoreline of Uusimaa and the urban Metropolitan area as well as lush forests and fertile fields of Southern Finland. The journey leads you along the seashore from the vivid Market Square past harbors, opulent villas and manors. On the way you see busy roads and a suburban residential area before the surroundings become greener. Then the city is left behind and the scenery is filled with forests and fields and you can hear the birds singing.
Along the way you can visit the little village of Östersundom. Then you cycle along the seaside to Porvoo. You can spend a day in Porvoo and enjoy the fascinating mixture of old and new. The red sheds along the Porvoojoki River and cobbled streets of Old Town reveal that it is the second oldest medieval town in Finland. You can taste local and organic food in several Porvoo restaurants.
When leaving Porvoo, you have two route options to go to Loviisa; You can cycle to Ilola and visit the idyllic Postimäki open air museum and ride towards Gammelby in the middle of the Southern Finnish countryside that offers lovely views alternating between serene woods and farms.
The other option is to cycle east towards Isnäs’ old sawmill milieu in hilly countryside and forest landscapes. Have a break and visit steam engine museum at the end of the road. You can cycle to visit the Rönnäs archipelago museum and there is also a beach for swimming.
The cyling route from Gammelby to Loviisa goes through some picturesque villages, Koskenkylä and Pernaja. Then you cycle to Loviisa along the King’s Road. Loviisa is a lively summer town with wooden neighborhood full of beautifully restored houses and gardens and a popular visitor’s marina.
From Loviisa you cycle along the old King’s Road by two old bastions to idyllic Ruotsinpyhtää. There you can visit an old iron works village, see local handicrafts and taste local food in restaurants and cafés. The other option is to cycle straight to Lapinjärvi and enjoy the beautiful countryside with golden fields surrounding the road.
Heading back towards Helsinki, you will cycle to Porlammi. Then you cycle to Askola, where you find the impressive Kirnukallio Potholes by the road.
