Bike with friends to Pyhäkero open wilderness hut. Pedal along an easy biking trail and find a picnic site tucked away in the national park’s mountain birch forests.
A biking expedition to Pyhäkero open wilderness hut is sure to put you in a good mood. This easy and fairly flat trail from Fell Lapland Visitor Centre to the hut is mostly gravel roads. Along the way you can stop to admire the view of Pyhäkero Fell on the horizon.
The yard at the open wilderness hut is a great place to build a campfire, roast a snack and spend some relaxing time together. You can also fill up your water bottles at the well in the yard.
Park your bikes at the hut and take a walk along the gravel trail towards the top of Pyhäkero Fell. The landscape opens up after a short climb, and the higher you go the farther you can see. The top of the fell provides great views all the way to the Pallastunturi Fells.
Tip: Find out about the life of the northern people at the free Sámi exhibition in Fell Lapland Visitor Centre.
The weather can change rapidly on the fell, and visibility can deteriorate very quickly. Always prepare for cold and rain; you should be prepared for wintery conditions in spring and autumn even if the weather is warm when you set off.
Mobile phone reception is not available on all hiking routes. The signal is usually better in higher and more open terrain. Download the 112 Finland application free of charge and activate it before starting your hike. Remember that mobile phone batteries run down quickly in cold conditions.
Dress according to the weather and choose footwear that is suitable for varied terrain.
Take something to eat, a drink, warm clothing, a fully charged phone, matches, toilet paper, a map, a first aid kit and a rubbish bag with you.
Finnish tap water is very clean. Fill your water bottles before starting out, because you may not necessarily have access to natural water. The availability of natural water varies, and each person uses it at their own risk.
Bicycle repair supplies and skills are necessary, because the trails are often located far away from roads and services.
During the summer, protect yourself from mosquitoes with clothing that covers your skin, a mosquito hat and insect repellent.
