A pleasant ride through rural Denmark on country roads to Fredensborg Palace returning via the forest trails of Danstrup and Krogenberg.
Leave Helsingør on cycle paths, leaving the coast behind and heading into rural Denmark. Pass through the peaceful Danish countryside, traditional villages like Gurre, and the remains of Gurre castle near Tikob. Pedal towards the impressive Fredensborg palace situated by Lake Esrum; the palace is the summer residence of the Danish royal family and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and extensive grounds. It's the perfect place to explore - why not find a nice lake side spot for a picnic?
From the palace follow the lakeside to reach the modest Fredensborg harbour before you make your return journey to Helsingør. The return route retraces your outward path before diverting onto woodland trails through Danstrup and Krogenberg to the village of Gurre and eventually back to Helsingør on the Øresund strait.
To make the most of the parks and grounds surrounding Fredensburg palace bring a picnic to enjoy on a relaxed summer afternoon, and perhaps treat yourself to an ice cream from the café near Fredensburg harbour before beginning the return cycle to Helsingør.
Much of today's ride follows quiet roads through the countryside, and although most drivers are used to cyclists in Denmark and will be courteous, remember to stay on the right-hand side of the road. Be mindful of other road users and remember to pull off the road completely if you intend to stop.
Before starting your ride please inspect your bike for damage to the frame, components or wheels. Ensure that there are no loose cables, that tyres are properly inflated and the brakes are working. Visitors from the UK should bear in mind the brakes may work the opposite way from which you are used to. If you are hiring a bike it is worthwhile taking a quick test ride when you collect your bike to familiarise yourself with the gears, brakes and to check your bike is setup correctly for you. Always wear a helmet when cycling and if you have any concerns over the condition of your rental bike please call the bike hire shop or our Macs office using the the number provided in your information pack.
Please beware of traffic wile out on your bike particularly when entering and leaving towns where traffic flow tends to be the highest. Remember to stay on the right-hand side and use cycle lanes where available. Be mindful of other road users, particularly cyclists on the busy cycle lanes in Copenhagen staying on the right-hand side to allow faster cyclists to pass.
Obey local road signs and look out for any change in road conditions.
Always be prepared to cycle through a change of weather conditions and check the local weather forecast before cycling. Remember to bring a waterproof jacket and a warm layer particularly as the wind around coastal Denmark can significantly effect the temperature. Gloves (fingerless mitts in summer) are popular to provide some extra warmth and handlebar padding when riding and don't forget a battery pack to provide an emergency charge to any navigation equipment you may be using.

Fredensborg Palace & Gardens
Visit the Danish royal family's summer palace at Fredensborg and wander around the sprawling grounds and magnificent gardens recently restored to how they would have been during the reign of Frederik V when they were created. Unfortunately the palace is not normally open to the public as this is where the royal family reside during the summer months. However, the private gardens are open to the public during July and August, and it's possible to book a guided tour of the palace and some private areas on select days during the summer.
