This ascent follows a trail first marked out by Austro-Hungarian soldiers, now the smooth provincial road no. 31 in the Autonomous Province of Trento. Down in the valley of Fiemme, in the vicinity of Molina the hill climbs steadily for the first stretch, becoming decidedly steeper in the final stretch.

In ancient local dialect a “manghen” is the pulley once used by the woodcutters to drag the felled tree-trunks away from the woods. Both sides of the mountain are still covered in dense fir forests and woodcutting traditions here are over a thousand years old, going back to medieval times when the Valle di Fiemme and its forests came under the jurisdiction of the Magnifica Comunità. Passo Manghen is a popular Summer resort and also the departure point for excursions up to the Lagorai mountains. It links the Valsugana with the Valle di Fiemme.
