An island with many facets
Sicily is the largest Mediterranean island and is separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. The largest cities on the island are Palermo, which is also the capital of the region, Catania, Messina and Syracuse. The highest point in Sicily is the 3345 m high Etna, which is also the largest and most active volcano in Europe.
The Aeolian Islands with the Stromboli and other craters lie in front of the northeast. Sicily has a Mediterranean climate with lots of sunshine. Not only many orchids do thrive on the island, which is rich in vegetation, but also tropical plants and unique fauna.
