Friuli Venezia Giulia is located in the extreme north-east of Italy and borders with Veneto to the west, Austria to the north, Slovenia to the east, and the Adriatic Sea to the south. The northern territories of the region are dominated by the Carnic Alps and the Julian Alps with magnificent views. Especially the caracteristic Carso Plateau offers spectacular rock conformations and caves due to the effects of erosion. The mountain ranges of Friuli are known for the scenes of violent battles that took place during the First World War. Nowadays it is possible to visit countless paths that follow trenches and defensive lines in memory of a sad past that has marked history. Towards the coastal area, on the other hand, there is the Marano Lagoon and tourist beaches that offer completely different panoramas from the Alpine ones.
