Discover the region
Half of the nature park is occupied by the vast forests of the Franconian Forest, hence the term “green crown of Bavaria” is often used. The impressive natural landscape is characterized, for example, by the wildly romantic Höllental valley or the Steinachklamm gorge. The species-rich fauna and flora also includes rare animal and plant species such as the black stork. Together with the nature parks Thuringian Forest and Thuringian Slate Mountains-Upper Saale, the Nature Park Franconian Forest forms a closed nature park area with about 4000 km².
Besides impressive nature, culture and tradition of the region can be discovered. Timber rafting and hand weaving give fascinating insights into the traditional landscape, in visitor mines you can learn about mining and mineral resources and in the historic town centers worth seeing churches and fortresses such as the water castle Mitwitz waiting for a visit.
