Holzbachschlucht
A picture like painted: maple, ash and elm bent at an acute angle over crystal clear water, the gurgling overpowering stones falls. The Holzbach, which has created the Holzbach Gorge, originates not far from Rennerod. It surrounds the villages of Waldmühlen and Seck and has made the remarkable breakthrough valley some 300 m below the farm estate Dapprich (between Seck and Gemünden). As early as 1929 the area was declared a protected area by the Prussian authorities and in 1961 it was protected as a natural protection area "Holzbachdurchbruch". It is remarkable here that the brook with its erosive force dug through the deck basalt and a fantastic ravine has milled into the volcanic rock. The basalt walls rise 20 to 30 meters in the narrow, about 1 kilometer long valley. Boulders, which are always detached, line the edge of the brook and give the natural woodland, which is left to itself, an original, wild appearance in its design possibilities. The vegetation of the gorge is also close by. The (overwhelming) non-mixing of man into the natural processes of this nature reserve contributes decisively to the preservation of the original landscape. The Schluchtwald mainly consists of maple, ash and elm trees and exhibits a species-rich Krautschicht. On the slopes you will find a Hainsimsen beech forest, which later turns into a Perlgras beech forest. Experience the most beautiful ravine of the inner Westerwald during a wild-romantic adventure hike on the approximately 3 km long circular hiking trail with information-rich forest trail (duration approx. 45 minutes) , Do not forget your sturdy footwear.
