Mount Kosciuszko
Summit
· Snowy Mountains
· 2,221 m
Mount Kosciuszko is the highest mountain in the Australian mainland at 2228 m. It is located on the Snowy Mountains in the state of New South Wales.
Whether the Mount Kosciuszko is among the famous "Seven Summits", can not be clarified properly today. The Carstensz pyramid (4884 m) on Papua Neuginea is the highest mountain of the oceanic continent - politically, however, this summit belongs to Asia and would thus be subjected to Mount Everest. The highest mountain of the Australian national territory in turn is the 2745 m high Mawson Peak, but that one lies on the Island of Heard, which does not belong to the oceanic continent.
Eponymous for Mount Kosciuszko was the Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko, who fought in the American Revolutionary War and committed to the abolition of slavery.
Around the mountain extends one of the largest national parks in Australia. Climbing Mount Kosciuszko is no challenge, a simple but long hiking trail leads to the summit.
