Elbrus
The panorama of the Elbrus is impressive: the Dongus Orun (4454 m) with its huge north face and wild hanging glaciers in the shape of a seven is particularly striking – as well as the elegant, double-headed Ushba (4737 m), which is also referred to as the Matterhorn of the Caucasus.
The first ascent of the eastern summit (5621 m) took place in 1829 by Kilar Chatschirow. Only 45 years later, in 1874, the three Englishmen Horace Walker, Frederick Gardiner and Florence Crawford succeeded to climb the western summit (5642 m) together with their Swiss mountain guide Peter Knubel.
