The Hohe Sonne site is right on the Rennsteig Trail and is the starting point of numerous hiking tours. The name ‘Hohe Sonne’ given to the small collection of buildings comes from the once ornate hunting lodge.
All that now remains are ruins of the complex that was built between 1741 and 1746 by the State Master Builder Gottfried Heinrich Krohne for Duke Ernest August I. Today the B19 runs right past the site.
In 1906, the first restaurant for day-trippers was opened and up until 1985, there was even a hotel here.
On the site of the hunting lodge, there is now a snack bar, which provides hikers and tourists with food and drink.
