Castello dei Vicari, the fortress that dominates Tuscany
A splendid fortress in the center of the village of Lari in the middle of the Pisan hills, from which it is possible to see the most beautiful and authentic part of Tuscany.
The fortress, already existing around the year one thousand, had its maximum splendor in the centuries after 1400. as the seat of the Florentine Vicariate. For more than four centuries, about a third of the current province of Pisa was administered from the Castle of Lari.
The Vicariate was abolished with the accession of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to the Kingdom of Italy, and yet a civil court order remained in Lari until the end of the 1960s.
In 1991 it began to revitalize it as a historic building, opening it to public visits thanks to the volunteers of the Cultural Association "Il Castello" supported by the Municipal Administration.
After a few years the first restorations began to restore part of the ancient beauty. Inside there was a prison, a Chancellery, the residence of the Vicar and the Court. The latter, which remained active until 1962, is now used for conferences and civil weddings, as well as the entrance courtyard framed by 92 coats of arms.
