Ventilation shaft 32 was part of the mine ventilation system and served for delivery of fresh air and tempering dust, blasting gases and ionizing radiation.
An elaborate ventilation system was built to supply the mine with fresh air. It also diluted and purged stone dust, blasting gases and ionising radiation. The system consisted of ventilation raises 20 and 32. For the purpose of protection the shafts were topped by shelters. From 1974 shaft 32 has been operated as fresh air shaft. Including the air ventilation of the Römerschacht a mine inflow-volume of 9,000 cbm/min could be realized.
The shelter for ventilation raise 32 was designed as a single-storey structure with large concrete-framed windows to ensure an optimum air supply for the ventilation shaft. The building is topped with a slate covered gable roof. The shaft pipe has been sealed with a concrete plug as part of the closure work at the Altenberg mine in 1993.
