Lithuanian Folk Museum (Rumšiškės)
Museum
With 195 ha, the museum is one of the largest ethnographic open-air museums in Europe. On this area visitors can get an insight of the past of Lithuania.
In 1966 the museum was founded. It is located in Rumšiškės on the shore of the Kaunas Sea. The museum is structured in such a way that the ethnographic regions of Lithuania Suvalkija, Dzūkija, Žemaitija (Samogitia), Aukštaitija (Upper Lithuania) and Little Lithuania from the end of the 18th to the middle of the 20th century are presented. The characteristics of the different regions are shown in the form of a miniature version of Lithuania on the 195 hectares. The reconstruction of domestic life, traditions of Lithuanian peasants, craftsmen's workshops, mills as well as agricultural implements gives visitors an authentic overall picture that makes them feel transported back in time. Activities such as horseback riding, a horse-drawn carriage ride or handicraft educational programs allow visitors to delve even deeper.
