Breathtaking views from one of the most spectacular paths in Europe. Here the Alpine landscapes of Valle di Ledro slowly turn into the Mediterranean-like sceneries of Lake Garda!
The Ponale road was built in the mid-19th century on the initiative of the tradesman Giacomo Cis to improve connections between Valle di Ledro and Lake Garda. Today it is a wonderful panoramic path for hikers and bikers. Ponale means many things: the torrent originating from Lake Ledro, the wind blowing westwards towards Lake Garda, the medieval donkey path from Valle di Ledro to Riva del Garda, the old 19th century road and the port which is the only enclave of Valle di Ledro by the shores of Lake Garda.
One of the last curves before reaching Riva is known as Lovers’ Belvedere. The story goes that Emperor Franz Joseph chose this very point for his surprise visit on the road, which was then still in construction.
