To the east of the Lenkjöchlhütte mountain hut, the site of recent glacial retreat is just a comfortable walk away. Here we can examine an area once covered by metres of ice, where glacial grinding and erratics once shaped the landscape. Reach out and touch the smooth surface of the rock worn away by glacial erosion and notice the scratches. These are clues to the direction of the glacial flow. To experience this glacial flow for yourself, run the palm of your hand along the stripes parallel to the glacier scratches. Against the grain and the flow of the glacier, the texture is rougher. In the direction the ice once moved, the surface of the rock feels smoother. As you look around, you’ll also begin to notice the surrounding vegetation. All around you, the pioneer plants are hard at work.
