NieuweStatenzijl consists of no more than five houses and a large drainage sluice. The WesterwoldseAa, which is fed by the RuitenAa and the Mussel Aa, discharges the superfluous water from East Groningen and South-east Drenthe into the Dollard River. The sluice is part of the Delta Plan and was put into use officially by H.M. Queen Beatrix on 21 May 1991. Next to the discharge sluice there is a lift-lock, mainly for recreational sailing vessels. On the side of the mud flats is a small marina. There is a small plaque at the sluice with the text of a song by Ede Staal (dialectic folk singer, 1941-1986), who lived in NieuweStatenzijl for a while. On the dyke is an artwork by Martin Borchert, called Waaiboei (Blowing Buoy). The Kiekkaaste a bird-watching hide, is located outside the dykes, in the salt marshes,. The hide can be reached by a path made of planks called the Marcellus Path – if the water level allows.
