Thorn's piers

The Netherlands can look back on a long and rich mill history. Originally built as a polder mill, the Thorn mill is located in a very special place. It was built on the border between the Netherlands and Germany at a point where, in addition to the two countries, three polders meet - namely the Dutch Circul van Ooij and Erlecomse polders and the German Düffel polder. The mill has certainly stood here since the 15th century. During this long period, it was also confronted with problems. A dike breach, conflicts on the border and the Second World War eventually led to the collapse of the mill. But despite all this, the mill has risen again from its ashes.

 

In 2005, a group of people interested in local history got together to talk about Thorn's Mill. The idea was born to rebuild it. After extensive research, approval procedures, resolutions and fundraising, the foundation board was able to get started with the real construction. Thus, the first stone was laid on 17 July 2015. On 15 July 2016, amid great public interest, the brake was released for the first time and the wings turned again as they used to.

The restaurant is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00.

There is the possibility to visit the Thorn mill. On request (minimum 5 people), a PowerPoint presentation is organised, which can include different thematic focuses, such as the mill and mill history, the war in the region or the history of the surrounding area and its rivers with floods. Afterwards, the interior of the mill can be visited, with expert explanations. A donation of EUR 3.50 is requested for this, which is intended for the upkeep of the mill. Excursions are also offered for schools. Prices on request.
