The Geiranger Fjord is an approximately 15 km long sea bay between Hellesylt and Geiranger in western Norway and as such the most famous fjord in Norway.
In western Norway the Geiranger Fjord is the most famous tourist destination. Every year, countless visitors flock to the fjord to view it and take their own postcard shots. The fjord is a popular destination for cruise ships because of its fascinating waterfalls, such as "The Seven Sisters", which cascade over the several hundred metre high rock faces. Already in 1869 the first pleasure steamer entered the fjord. The bay is located between imposing mountain peaks and reaches a water depth of up to 260 metres. On the steep slopes, there are still a few farms that give the area a very special charm. The Geiranger Fjord together with the Nærøy Fjord has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The Geiranger Fjord, known as the "pearl" or "jewel" of the Norwegian fjords, is a side arm of the Stor Fjord. At the entrance of the fjord is the town of Ålesund, which is well worth seeing, and at the end of the fjord is the touristically overcrowded town of Geiranger.
