The church is centrally located in Gävle and is the end point for the Saint's Trail stage from Mårtsbo to Gävle, and the starting point for the stage Gävle to Trödje.
The church was first erected in the middle of 1600, on the grounds of a medieval trinity church that was destroyed by a fire. The inauguration took place on July 14, 1654. The church has since then undergone a series of renovations and extensions.
