Guided tour through 550 years of mining activity
Mining in the area around Altenberg began in the first half of the 15th century. Around 1440, miners discovered an extensive tin ore deposit at the foot of the Geisingberg. After 37 million tonnes of tin ore had been mined, ore extraction and processing had to be discontinued in 1991 for reasons of profitability. Today, a number of mining monuments witness to 550 years of traditional mining activity in the mining town of Altenberg (Erzgebirge).
