The Altenberg Pinge is the largest of its kind in the eastern Ore Mountains and its existence testifies to the importance of tin mining, which lasted for centuries and was of pan-European significance.
Pinge is located right on the outskirts of Altenberg.It demonstrates the dimensions of what was once the most important tin deposit in Central Europe. From the mid-16th century onwards, tin ore was intensively mined by extending shafts, which led to a gradual subsidence above ground and finally to a major collapse at the beginning of the 17th century.Thereafter, the ore was further extracted by underground mining. Blasting was also used. As a result, the edges of the Pinge continued to slump and today the 400 m diameter cave funnel covers an area of about 12 hectares.For safety reasons, no one is allowed to enter the crater anymore. However, on a guided tour it is possible to see into the depths of the crater from a viewing platform near the rim of the pit. Access to this platform is only possible under professional supervision during the tour.
