Neuschwanstein Castle
The Neuschwanstein castle is probably the most famous in Germany and is located on a hill above the city of Füssen in the Allgäu. Because of its picturesque exterior, Neuschwanstein is often called a "fairytale castle" - it was the residence of the "fairytale king" Ludwig II of Bavaria.
The shy king had the castle built to seek solitude in the beautiful Allgäu landscape. The grand building, resembling an "old German knight's castle," was created by the famous architects Eduard Riedel and Georg von Dollmann.
Only a few weeks after Ludwig's death, the castle was opened to the public in 1886. Since then, Neuschwanstein has been one of the most visited and most photographed castles in the world. Every year almost 1.5 million people visit the castle. Every summer, on average, about 6,000 people arrive here per day.
After visiting the castle, you can go for a walk through the beautiful surroundings, or visit the castle Hohenschwangau, located further down the valley at the Alpsee and Schwansee.
